Another wait for delayed bank burglar

A member of a gang who arrived to rob a bank moments after it closed because their stolen getaway car had been delayed in rush hour traffic, has had his sentence adjourned at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Dermot O'Callaghan (39) and his gang attempted to force the door open but fled after gardaí were alerted. He pointed a firearm out a window at gardaí during a high-speed chase around heavy traffic.

O'Callaghan, Maxwell Street, Rialto, pleaded guilty to possession of an imitation firearm and attempted burglary at Ulster Bank, Main Street, Tallaght, on September 29th, 2003.

The other members of the gang were sentenced in 2005. Judge Tony Hunt adjourned sentencing until next month.

10 years in jail for cannabis cache

A cocaine addict who was found with cannabis valued at more than €1 million in a luxury Clontarf flat has been jailed for 10 years by Judge Frank O'Donnell at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

George Keogh (28), a van driver, Lisboduff, Cootehill, Co Cavan, owed up to €40,000 to lending agencies and drug dealers.

He pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs for sale or supply at Clontarf Bay Apartments, Clontarf, on January 12th, 2007.

Keogh's brother, Thomas (36), of the same Cootehill address, is due for sentence in November after he pleaded guilty in July to possession of the €1 million cache of cannabis in the apartment they shared.

Jail for abuse of two daughters

A north Co Dublin man who sexually assaulted two of his daughters over 10 years, beginning when one of the girls was aged five, has been jailed for three years by the Central Criminal Court.

The 62-year-old man pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault and one of sexual assault against one daughter in 1985, 1988 and 1993 and to one charge of the indecent assault of another daughter in 1983.

He waited until the first daughter had given evidence in a trial earlier this year before entering the pleas.

He had originally denied 26 charges of sexually assaulting and raping her.

Praise for efforts of former addict

A man who used a knife to threaten staff in a pharmacy, before stealing €580 and Valium tablets, has been given a three-year suspended sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Katherine Delahunt said that Andrew Merrigan (30), who was living in a homeless unit, had since made "phenomenal progress" having dealt with his chronic drug addiction in a residential treatment centre.

Judge Delahunt said that Merrigan was now drug-free. She suspended the sentence on condition that he continue treatment. Merrigan had pleaded guilty to robbery in December 2006 of the pharmacy on the Sallynoggin Road, Dún Laoghaire.
