Woman (29) killed in crash near Tuam

A 29-year-old woman was killed in a single-vehicle car crash near Tuam, Co Galway, yesterday morning.

Áine O'Malley of Creevagh, The Neale, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, died when her car went off the road at Castlegrove, Kilconly, at about 8.30am.

Pensioner dies on family farm

A pensioner who died in a farm incident near Tuam, Co Galway, on Saturday evening was named yesterday as Billy Fahy (76), Peak, Barnaderg.

He died in a slurry pit accident at his family farm.

Hume injured in car collision

Former SDLP leader John Hume and his wife Pat suffered minor injuries in a car collision in Co Donegal at the weekend. Two cars were involved in the crash at Carrowtrasna near Greencastle at 5.30pm on Saturday. The couple were briefly treated at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry, and then released. The driver of the second car was not injured.

Body recovered off Antrim coast

A man's body has been recovered from the sea off the north coast of Antrim. He was discovered close to Dunseverick Harbour on Saturday evening shortly before 6pm.

The PSNI last night named him as 66-year-old John McCutcheon, from the Sunningdale Gardens area of Belfast.

He had been missing since March 6th. Initial inquiries suggest there are no suspicious circumstances, the police said.

Garda plea after violent robbery

Gardaí from Pearse Street Garda station, Dublin, have appealed for witnesses to an aggravated burglary in which an elderly man was threatened and robbed at knife-point.

The man was attacked at 5.20pm at his home on Mespil Road, Dublin.

Gardaí are appealing for taxi drivers who picked up a male fare in the Leeson Street Bridge/Mespil Road at about 5.30pm and dropped him off at the GPO on O'Connell Street to come forward. Gardaí said the man may have paid the fare in sterling.

They also would like to speak to any person who was in the Mespil Road area at 5pm-5.30pm and noticed anything suspicious to contact Pearse Street Garda station on 01-666-9000.

BSE cases drop to four this year

There have been four cases of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) found so far this year in the Irish herd, the Department of Agriculture and Food said at the weekend.

The total number of confirmed cases in 2007 was 25. This compares with 41 cases for 2006, 69 cases in 2005, 126 cases in 2004, 182 cases in 2003 and 333 cases in 2002.
