Brown not ruling out organ scheme
LONDON - British prime minister Gordon Brown has said he would not rule out bringing in a "presumed consent" scheme for organ donation, even though it was rejected by experts set up by the government to look at the issue. The Organ Donation Taskforce said evidence from across the world indicated that such a scheme, which would effectively make everyone a potential donor unless they chose to opt out, would not improve donation rates.
But Mr Brown said: "While they are not recommending the introduction of a presumed consent system as I have done, I am not ruling out a further change in the law. - (Reuters)
UMP member in double killing
PARIS - A French member of parliament from the ruling UMP party killed a woman with a gun before taking his own life with the same weapon yesterday, a local prosecutor said.
Jean-Marie Demange (65) from the Moselle region of eastern France, shot the 43-year-old divorcee in the head with an automatic gun on the balcony of her home before killing himself, said Jean-François Mailhes.
The connection between Mr Demange and the woman, who had two children, had yet to be determined although a
romantic liaison could not be ruled out, Mr Mailhes said. - (Reuters)
