Cleared MP eyes return to government
LONDON - Peter Hain was eyeing a return to the government yesterday after being cleared by prosecutors over donations to his campaign for Labour's deputy leadership.
The former cabinet minister made clear he wanted to re-enter frontline politics after a police investigation into his finances came to nothing. Prime Minister Gordon Brown hinted of a political comeback , saying the MP had "much to offer in the future". - (PA)
Cruise ship strikes rocks
BUENOS AIRES - More than 120 passengers and crew had to be rescued today from a cruise ship that hit rocks off Antarctica.
The Chilean navy took 89 passengers and 33 crew from the Ushuaia to their naval base. A rock damaged the hull as it passed through the Gerlache Strait. - (PA)
S Africa responds to cholera plea
CAPE TOWN - South Africa will send government officials to Zimbabwe next week to assess the food crisis and investigate what aid is needed, a government spokesman said yesterday.
Zimbabwe has declared a national emergency and appealed for international help as it battles a cholera outbreak that has killed at least 565 people. - (Reuters)
Drug to thicken eyelashes safe
ROCKVILLE - An Allergan Inc glaucoma drug is safe and effective enough for US regulators to approve cosmetic use to lengthen and thicken eyelashes, a US advisory panel ruled yesterday. The drug is known generically as bimatoprost and is sold for glaucoma under the name Lumigan. Allergan estimates the eyelash use could fetch $500 million in annual sales. - (PA)
