Inquiry into alleged assault at HSE party

Gardaí in Dublin are investigating an incident involving two senior Health Service Executive (HSE) staff members which left one of the men with a broken arm, writes Steven Carroll.

The incident took place outside Nancy Hands bar on Parkgate Street on July 18th, as HSE staff gathered for a farewell party for Alex Connolly, the executive's former head of communications, who was leaving to take up a job with Fáilte Ireland.

A Garda spokesman said officers from the Bridewell station were investigating "an assault causing harm" which occurred at 23.45 on July 18th on Parkgate Street.

The injured party was a man and no arrests had been made in connection with the incident, the spokesman said.

In a statement, the HSE said it had been made aware of an alleged incident.

"The matter is being examined by the appropriate authorities in accordance with the normal processes in such situations," the HSE statement said.

Tibet supporters to protest outside Chinese embassy

Members and supporters of the Tibetan community in Ireland are to hold a peaceful protest in Dublin tomorrow to highlight alleged human rights violations in the territory.

Tibetans across the globe have been protesting since anti-government riots broke out in the Tibetan capital Lhasa in March to mark the anniversary of a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. Over 200 protesters were killed during the riots. The protest takes place outside the Chinese Embassy on Ailesbury Road in Ballsbridge at 11am.

Man (80) missing after funeral

A search was continuing yesterday for an 80-year-old Belfast man who went missing in Co Kerry on Friday after attending the funeral of his 20-year-old grandnephew, writes Anne Lucey.

The Shannon-based search-and-rescue helicopter along with a large number of volunteers, gardaí and the Dingle Coastguard unit were involved in the search yesterday for Tony Crickard of Norfolk Parade, Belfast.

He had attended the funeral of Shane Crickard, from Ballyduff in north Kerry, who died in a road traffic collision near Causeway on Monday morning last when his motorbike collided with a van.

It is understood Mr Crickard was to spend a few days in Dingle after the funeral and attended St Mary's Church in Green Street at around 4pm. This was the last confirmed sighting of him.

The search was concentrated on the Brandon Creek area of the Dingle peninsula yesterday after a reported sighting of a man fitting his description.
