Woman (21) killed after lorry hits car
A 21-year-old-woman has died after a lorry overturned and hit her car in Adamstown, Co Wexford, at 3pm yesterday.
Another car was also involved in the collision, but neither of the two occupants were injured.
The driver of the lorry was not injured. The woman's body was taken to Wexford General Hospital, where a postmortem was due to take place.
Armed gang rob security van
An armed gang escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash after holding up a cash-in-transit van as it was about to make a delivery in Drogheda, Co Louth, yesterday. A shot was fired at the security man carrying the cash, but he was uninjured.
Cryptosporidium detected in water
The cryptosporidium parasite which contaminated water supplies in Galway city and county last year has been detected in a private group water scheme in east Galway.
Users of the scheme in Ballinabanaba have been warned that water drawn from the area must be boiled. Tests on the supply showed traces of the e-coli and clostridia, indicating pollution, according to Galway County Council.
Pipe bomb defused in North
A "viable device" was defused by police in Dungannon, Co Tyrone, after an unsuspecting member of the public carried it to the local police station on Wednesday.
The pipe bomb was dealt with by the British army, which led to the police station being cordoned off overnight.
Man missing after boat capsizes
An elderly man was still missing last night while a second man is recovering in hospital after a small boat capsized as they were pulling in lobster pots off the Clare coast yesterday.
A 53-year-old man from Limerick, who was airlifted to hospital in Tralee, is only alive because he managed to find an air pocket beneath the 7ft punt, The missing second man is 75.
The pair were working at around 3.30pm near the Diamond Rocks Kilkee, when the incident occurred. At the time the sea was said to be "rough with a big swell".
Polish paper to publish here
Poland's biggest-selling newspaper is to publish a weekly edition for the country's emigrant population in Ireland.
The tabloid Fakt, which has a daily circulation of about 500,000 in Poland, distributed 13,000 copies of its first weekly edition here yesterday. The 32-page paper will carry news from both countries. Poland's prime minister Donald Tusk said the launch of the new edition, which follows another special edition for Poles in Britain, was a very significant event.
Man charged over teen shooting
A 27-year-old man appeared at Waterford District Court yesterday charged in connection with the shooting of a teenager at a city halting site. Bridget Delaney (16) was shot in Bilberry on August 8th.
Patrick Stokes (27), Ardmore Park, Ballybeg, was charged with assault causing harm and with the possession of a firearm on that date.
Mr Stokes was further remanded in custody to October 2nd.
Charity to hand out light bulbs
Energy-saving light bulbs are to be distributed to households in Dublin by The Society of St Vincent de Paul to help families reduce their spending on electricity.
The society said the idea comes after steep rises in energy costs in recent times and a 50 per cent increase in the number of people seeking its assistance.
