Man's body recovered from sea
The body of a man has been recovered from the sea in Co Clare following a four-day search, launched after a small boat capsized with two people on board.
Two men were pulling in lobster pots at an area known as the Diamond Rocks in Kilkee Bay when their boat overturned in rough seas.
Philip Browne (55), from Limerick, was recovered alive after he had been trapped in an air pocket beneath the boat. However the second man, 75-year-old Eddie Sweeney from Kilkee, was lost in the rough seas.
While not formally identified last night, the body is believed to be that of Eddie Sweeney.
Guns and drug haul found
Gardaí discovered drugs, guns and ammunition in a raid in north Dublin on Saturday.
Among the haul was 1kg of cocaine, with a street value of €75,000. The arms included two assault rifles, a shotgun, a handgun and ammunition for the weapons.
The discovery was made during a search of the Kinsealy lane area of Malahide at about 5.30pm.
File for DPP on fire deaths
A file is being prepared for the DPP following the arrest, questioning and later release of a man in his 40s in connection with investigations into the death of two firemen in Bray on September 26th, 2007.
Fergus Rowan of seed firm dies
The death has taken place of Fergus Rowan who for many years worked in the family business Rowan Seeds in Dublin's Westmoreland Street.
Mr Rowan campaigned against the Bank of Ireland alleging unfair treatment at its hands after it forced the closure of the seed shop. An implacable critic of the bank, he staged a sit-in. The shop ultimately reopened as a branch of the Bank of Ireland.
Mr Rowan is survived by his wife Kathleen and 10 children.
200 troops fly out to Chad
Irish troops flew out for Chad last night to take up peace enforcement duties in the central African country. Soldiers from the 98th Infantry Battalion left family and friends at barracks in Kilkenny, Limerick, Cork and Clonmel yesterday to begin a four-month tour of duty at Camp Ciara in Chad.
The 200 Irish troops will arrive to intense heat of up to 50°C as they replace the 97th Infantry Battalion stationed close to the Sudanese boarder.
Irish troops from the 97th came under fire from rebel factions operating in the region last June, however there were no casualties resulting from the incident.
Campaign to cut youth drinking
A number of agencies have come together in the Dublin suburb of Clondalkin to try and curb the number of young people who start drinking.
The B Smart initiative will target sixth-class pupils in local primary schools as well as supporting their parents.
A group of youth workers will go into the schools every second week to talk to the pupils about making healthy choices. And the programme will follow these children into second level.
In addition youth cafes will be set up and seminars will be run for parents on how to talk to children about the issue of alcohol.
