Counsellor questioned by gardaí
A drugs counsellor has been interviewed by gardaí after allegedly being seen passing contraband drugs to an inmate during visiting time at Mountjoy Prison. The counsellor, who works for an external agency, was visiting an inmate serving a lengthy sentence for drug dealing.
A prison officer saw a tissue being left on a desk by the counsellor, which was then picked up by the inmate.
The officer alerted a senior member of staff who examined the tissue. It was found to contain about 12 sleeping tablets.
Man drowned on honeymoon
A 38-year-old Tyrone man has drowned while swimming in the sea while on honeymoon in Cyprus. Eamon McGlinchey and his wife Sinead married on June 21st. The McGlinchey family runs a cafe in Coalisland. Local priest Fr John Burns said: "He was an only son and to have the joy 10 days ago of celebrating a marriage and now to be organising a funeral isn't something you would expect."
Two hospitalised after Ennis fire
Two people were recovering in hospital last night after they were rescued from a blazing building in Ennis, Co Clare. A woman and a man, both in their 40s, sustained serious burns in the fire, which broke out in a flat in the Pearse Avenue area shortly before 7.30pm.
Eleven to be ordained this year
Eleven men are to be ordained to the priesthood this year, a significant increase on 2007 when two were ordained. The graduates from St Patrick's College Maynooth are currently being ordained in dioceses around the country.
