Extradition request adjourned
The High Court has adjourned an application by the Northern Ireland authorities for the extradition of a Co Galway businessman charged in connection with an alleged £900,000 (€1.1 million) VAT fraud.
Rory McGann (38), a hide and skin trader with an address at Dunloe Court, Ballinasloe, is wanted on charges of defrauding the Customs and Excise authorities in the North of VAT duties.
Mr Justice John Hedigan agreed to put Mr McGann's case back for a fortnight.
Suspended term for toy gun threat
A man who threatened a bouncer at his local pub with a toy gun after being barred from the premises, was given a suspended eight-month sentence and fined €500 at Galway District Court yesterday.
Michael Nolan (45), Cooke's Terrace, Bohermore, Galway, pleaded guilty last week to making a threat to doorman Gediminuas Paskauskas at Paddy's Bar, Prospect Hill, Galway, on April 1st last, in such a way as to make him believe he would be killed or seriously harmed.
Sex offender remanded
The High Court has remanded in custody, with consent to bail, a British sex offender who is appealing against an order for his extradition to the UK on a charge of failing to report to the probation authorities on his release from prison.
Mr Justice John Hedigan yesterday ruled that John Murrell (39), with an address at Athy, Co Kildare, may be released on bail pending his Supreme Court appeal only if he meets certain conditions.
Extradition of murderer sought
The High Court has adjourned an application for the extradition to the UK of a convicted murderer, who was recently released from prison here after serving a sentence for the rape of a young female tourist.
Mark Trayton Smith (47), a native of Cheltenham, England, was further remanded in continuing custody yesterday by Mr Justice John Hedigan for a week.
