Ben Dunne may seek MEP seat
Multimillionaire businessman Ben Dunne has said that he will run for a European Parliament seat in Dublin if the Government tries to hold a second referendum before next June's elections.
The French president "had a hell of a cheek to tell us to vote again when he did not allow his own people to have a vote", said Mr Dunne, who called for a No vote in the days before last month's referendum was held.
The Yes campaign, he said, had tried "to make dirt out of everybody" during the referendum campaign: "Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour all got a kick in the backside."
Kraftwerk to headline festival
German electro-pop giants Kraftwerk are to headline a music festival at the Luggala estate in Co Wicklow.
The festival takes place in the grounds of the home of Guinness heir Garech Browne on September 13th and is called "A Day In The Life" after his brother, Tara Brown.
Tara inspired the Beatles song of the same name after he died in a car crash in London in 1966. Tara Browne is buried on the Luggala estate where the concert takes place.
The festival will be unique in that no private vehicles will be allowed into the estate. All of the 4,999 fans (more than 5,000 requires a special licence) will be asked to come by public transport. Tickets at €99 go on sale today.
No bail for policeman in US shooting case
A US police officer will remain behind bars as the courts process sex-abuse charges against him and investigators prepare a case for a grand jury that will consider the killing of 20-year-old Irish citizen Andrew Hanlon.
Tony Gonzalez (35) appeared in a Salem, Oregon, court yesterday for arraignment on the abuse charges. Salem police allege he had resumed an abusive relationship with the girl after he had shot and killed Mr Hanlon last month.
Investigators have said little except that Mr Gonzalez was responding to a burglary call.
The case is expected to go to a grand jury soon.
Judge Joseph Ochoa rejected a bail request. Mr Gonzalez is due back in court later in July.
