Teenagers questioned in Dublin killing
Two teenagers were last night being questioned about the murder of David Rooney (35), Durrow Rd, Crumlin, Dublin 12. He died last week from injuries sustained during a street attack at Clonmacnoise Road, Crumlin, on July 2nd.
Two 18-year-olds, a man and a woman, were arrested yesterday under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. They were being held at Crumlin and Sundrive Road Garda stations.
Footballer in assault inquiry
An inter-county footballer was arrested after an alleged serious assault on O'Connell St, Dublin, at about 10pm on Monday.
Gardaí are investigating an allegation that the player and a small group of people he was with became involved in an altercation with the injured party.
It is alleged that after words were exchanged the footballer assaulted a member of the opposing group. The player was taken to nearby Store Street station, was questioned and released.
The injured party made a complaint to gardaí and a criminal investigation has begun.
Man jailed for carrying gun
A Moldavan man who came to Ireland to avoid military service has been given a four-year sentence after being seen walking around in broad daylight with a gun in his belt.
Eugeniu Neagu (19), who was found by gardaí to have multiple identity documents in a variety of names and nationalities, told them he found the loaded pistol in a park in Tallaght.
Neagu, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of a semi-automatic pistol at Ringsend Road on September 7th, 2007.
He had no previous convictions.
Judge Katherine Delahunt imposed a four-year sentence and backdated it for nine months to reflect time spent in custody.
Sentence later for drug possession
A heroin-addicted mother of two who hid cocaine valued at €16,892 in her kitchen for her jailed boyfriend has had her sentence adjourned by Judge Katherine Delahunt at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Anne Marie Raynor (24), Belcamp Avenue, Priorswood, pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs for sale or supply at her home on April 17th, 2007.
She had 24 previous convictions, mainly for road traffic offences.
Judge Delahunt adjourned sentencing until November to allow a probation report be prepared.
Burglar 'tried out' car, left it at pub
A burglar who broke into a house to steal items to sell so that he could support his daughter and took the owner's sports car to "try it out" before leaving it undamaged outside a pub has been given a three-year sentence.
Tony Walsh (26), of St Mark's Crescent, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to burglary and unlawful use of a car between August 21st and 30th, 2006.
Judge Katherine Delahunt suspended the final year on strict conditions.
Man hurt after being hit by Luas
A man was receiving hospital treatment yesterday evening having been struck by a Luas tram in Dublin city centre.
The pedestrian, who is in his 60s, is said to have stepped out in front of the Green Line tram as it moved towards Harcourt Street from St Stephen's Green at about 2.15pm.
He was taken to St James's Hospital. His injuries are understood to be minor.
Luas services were halted between St Stephen's Green and Beechwood stations following the incident.
