Man charged after death of Czech woman
A 22-year-old Czech national was remanded in custody at a special court in Galway yesterday in connection with the discovery of a woman's body near Inverin, Connemara, early last Monday morning.
Jakub Fidler, with an address at Cartur Leathan, Inverin, Co Galway, was charged with assaulting Nicola Vonkova, causing her harm at Cartur Leathan, Inverin, on July 21st last, contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.
Det Sgt Tom Molloy gave evidence at the special sitting of Galway District Court of arresting the accused at Galway Garda station at noon yesterday and with charging him at 2.16 pm with assaulting Ms Vonkova, causing her harm. He said the accused replied "No", when the charge was put to him.
Judge Mary Fahy remanded Mr Fidler in custody to appear before Harristown District Court in Castlerea at 10.30am next Friday, July 25th, for DPP's directions.
Man in gun case remanded on bail
A Dublin man charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition appeared at the Special Criminal Court yesterday.
David O'Connor (23), Mary Aikenhead House, James's Street, Dublin, is charged with possession of a Taurus 9mm semi-automatic pistol, and 18 rounds of ammunition at the M1 motorway, Balgeen, Julianstown, Co Meath, on May 13th this year.
Mr Justice Paul Butler, presiding at the three-judge court, remanded him on bail until October when the book of evidence is expected to be served.
Sentence pending in rape trial
A 64-year-old Dublin man who raped a teenage girl has been remanded on bail for sentence later. Anthony Daly, with an address at Woodlands Road, Dun Laoghaire, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to three charges of raping the victim and one count of sexual assault on dates from 1998 to 2004. His pleaded guilty before the trial started.
Mr Justice Barry White directed that Daly's name be added to the register of sex offenders and also directed the preparation of reports for the sentence hearing.
Defendant faces child porn charge
A man from Derry is to appear before the local magistrate's court for a preliminary inquiry next month charged with the possession of indecent images of children.
Frederick Burder (26), from Kingsmere Gardens, is charged with possessing, making and possessing with a view to distribute or show the indecent images.
He was remanded on bail yesterday to appear in court on August 19th.
Four accused of IRA membership
Four men arrested in Co Donegal last March appeared at the Special Criminal Court yesterday charged with IRA membership.
All four men have addresses in Derry. They are Gary Donnelly (38), Kildrum Gardens; Michael Gallagher (28), Sackville Court; Martin Francis O'Neill (date of birth unknown), Colmcille Court; and Patrick John McDaid (39), Marlborough St.
Mr Justice Paul Butler, presiding, remanded the men in custody until next week when the book of evidence is expected to be served and a bail application from Gary Donnelly is expected to be heard.
