Charges due over €3.5m drug seizure

A man arrested in connection with a major drug seizure at the weekend is due to face charges this morning when he appears at Kilmainham District Court.

Gardaí seized drugs with a street value of up to €3.5 million, including 420kg of herbal cannabis and 10kg of cocaine, during a raid on an industrial estate in west Dublin on Saturday. A gun and ammunition were also taken.

A spokesman said gardaí believed the seizure had broken up an international drug supply route into the country.

The raid was part of an ongoing operation between police in Ireland, the UK and across Europe.

A man in his 20s from the Drimnagh area of Dublin was arrested in the raid. He was being held at Clondalkin Garda station last night under the Drug Trafficking Act.

Plastic bag levy now at 22 cent

An increase in the plastic bag levy frim 15 cent to 22 cent came into effect yesterday.

The new charge is the maximum allowable under existing legislation.

'Distress' at C of I cleric's conviction

The Church of Ireland Bishop of Clogher, Right Rev Michael Jackson, has expressed his "deep distress" at a case involving a clergyman of the diocese who was convicted in court last week of possessing indecent images of children, writes Patsy McGarry.

Rev Stephen Crowther (48) was placed on the sex offenders register for five years and fined £2,500 at the court in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh.

He had been rector at the Holy Trinity parish in Lisnaskea.

Before arriving there in 2001 he served in the Philippines, Dublin, Belfast and Kilkenny.

Businesses urged to help elderly

Businesses in Dublin city centre are being urged by an older persons' support group to encourage their staff to give up time to visit elderly people living in the area.

The Friends of the Elderly charity is aiming its appeal at large companies in areas such as the Irish Financial Services Centre (IFSC).
