Catalogue of damage duo sentenced

A man and a youth charged with a catalogue of damage in west Kerry in 2005 have each received three year suspended sentences at Tralee Circuit Court. One of the two pleaded guilty to causing damage of over €1 million to the Christian Brothers' school in Dingle.

The first fire on New Year's Day 2005 damaged six classrooms and the second on February 11th, 2005, damaged temporary prefabricated classrooms.

The 17-year-old youth pleaded guilty to a further 22 charges including criminal damage to property and stealing three cars from a garage in Milltown.

A second man, Sam Lynch (18) An Cheathrú, Dún Chaoin, faced 18 charges including criminal damage to property and stealing three cars from a garage in Milltown.

A previous sitting of the court heard that Dingle garage owner John Griffin whose cars and property were damaged to the value of €24,150, had received compensation.

Girl (6) bitten by pit bull terrier

A six-year-old Limerick girl is recovering after she was bitten by a pit bull terrier. Her injuries were not serious but gardaí have warned that the owner of the animal, which was not muzzled could face prosecution.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Tuesday when the child was jumped on by the animal as she was leaving a house oCollins Avenue. A Garda investigation is under way to find the owner of the animal.

Jailed councillor allowed to vote

The Galway county councillor who is serving a 12-month prison term for fraud and attempted theft from his local authority has been granted special arrangements to vote in the Seanad election.

Cllr Michael "Stroke" Fahy will be able to give his postal vote to the governor of Castlerea Prison Co Roscommon under the terms of the Electoral (Amendment) Act, 2006.

Ballyshannon invitation to Blair

Ballyshannon Town Council is to issues a second invitation to former British prime minister Tony Blair to visit his maternal roots in Co Donegal. An earlier invitation was acknowledged by Downing Street which said Mr Blair was unlikely to be able to fit in a visit while in office.

Fine Gael councillor Phonsie Travers, who proposed that the invitation be reissued, said: "He might have a bit more time on his hands now." If the former premier accepts he is likely to be given a civic reception.

Teen killed in collision with car

A teenager died on Tuesday night when his bicycle collided with a car at Tomsilla on the main Gorey to Courtown road in Co Wexford.

He was named locally as Greg Kavanagh (19), Ramsford, Gorey. The driver and passenger of the car were not injured.

Violence in housing estate

Violence erupted in a Limerick housing estate again this week when two houses were petrol bombed on the same night.

The latest attacks in the Moyross estate took place in the early hours of yesterday morning. Nobody was injured.
