Firm is fined €26,000 over worker's death
A company has been fined €26,000 at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for breaches of the health and safety code which led to a fatal accident.
Gregorz Ogorzalek (32) was engaged and had one child when he died after concrete blocks fell on his head while he was operating machinery he had not been properly trained to use.
Independent Fence Manufacturing Limited, Unit 3, Castlebaggot, Newcastle, Co Dublin pleaded guilty to two charges arising out of the incident on the company's premises in August 2005.
Man gets three years for assault
A man who punched another in the face fracturing his skull and jaw has received a three-year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Aaron Fleming (28), a bodybuilder, Newbury Park, Coolock, Dublin, pleaded guilty to assaulting Terry O'Driscoll at Forrester Way, Swords in September 2005.
Seven years for knife attack
A heroin addict who stabbed a woman several times in an attempt to steal her handbag in Dublin last year has been sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to seven years.
Alan Edgar (43) was living in a car on Benburb Street when he attacked Karen Chambers. He pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and assault causing harm at Wolfe Tone Quay in July 2006.
He came up behind Ms Chambers, put a knife to her throat and demanded her handbag. She struggled and he stabbed her a number of times. She suffered injuries to her neck, leg and arms and defensive wounds to her hands.
Murder trial jury sworn in
The jury has been sworn in for the trial of a Dublin man accused of attempted murder in 2005. Paul Hurley (19), Clonmacnoise Road, Crumlin, Dublin, denies attempting to murder Daniel Doyle in August 2005 or causing him serious harm.
Bias against disabled woman
A local authority has been found to have discriminated against a woman who suffers from a disability that means she is overcome by anxiety if she leaves her apartment. Miss D had been refused a larger apartment, when the area where she lived for more than 15 years, was undergoing a €3 billion urban renewal and she was forced to move.
An Equality Tribunal decision yesterday said Ms D should be provided with a bigger apartment within six months. It also said she should be paid compensation of €2,500 as redress for the discrimination she suffered.
