Pedestrian killed on the Ring of Kerry

A woman pedestrian in her 70s died yesterday after being struck by a car on the N72 Ring of Kerry road on the outskirts of Killarney shortly after 3pm.

It is understood the woman, a local, was attempting to cross the road at Bohereen na Marbh, Ballydowney, near the Killarney riding stables.

Postmortem on drowned woman

A postmortem was expected to be carried out yesterday evening on the body of a woman recovered from a lake near Fore, Co Westmeath.

Gardaí said the woman in her 40s had gone swimming in White Lake at about 1.30pm. Her body was recovered 20 minutes later.

Crashes cause long tailbacks

Motorists on the N11/M11 between the southeast and Dublin were faced with long delays both in and out of Dublin yesterday.

At 8.40am, a three-car crash resulted in the closure of the northbound section of the M11, resulting in a tailback of more than 10km to the Delgany/Greystones junction.

As the evening commute out of the city got under way at about 4pm, a crash at Kilmacanogue closed one lane of the N11, leading to long delays getting to Co Wicklow and beyond.

New Irish judge for Europe

A new Irish judge to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg is to be chosen in October from a Department of Justice shortlist of three by the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly, the Government has said.

The vacancy has been caused by the return to the High Court bench of Mr Justice John Hedigan, who had served as a member of the Strasbourg court since November 1998.

The shortlist will be not be released until after the summer break.

Dissidents blamed for bomb alerts

Dissident republicans have been blamed for a series of bomb alerts in Derry yesterday, one of which was outside a hotel where the Chief Constable of the PSNI Sir Hugh Orde was due to address a conference on policing.

The alerts started just before 5.30am when a member of the Tower Hotel's security staff noticed a suspect package outside the front door. Police discovered a second suspect device outside the hotel's emergency exit door.

The 150 residents in the hotel were not obliged to evacuate during the alert.
