Bangor and Kilkeel lifeboat stations are the only other RNLI bases to have this model to date.

The €200,000 craft is named Minnie and Ernest George Barry, and is funded from a legacy left by Mrs Barry. Originally from Pinner, Middlesex, England, she died 10 years ago; her only known Irish connection is that her husband's grandfather was from Dublin.

Lough Swilly lifeboat operations manager Liam Magee said the crew was thrilled that its station should have been picked as the first in the Republic to be allocated the new design.

However, a spokesman repeated the assertion that the reports were inaccurate and said a decision would be announced in about two or three weeks.

The Greystones Protection and Development Association, which has opposed the scheme, had said it had been told a deal had been completed.
