Two arrested after €6m drugs raid

Two men were arrested last night after a €6 million drug raid on a warehouse in Cornelscourt, south Co Dublin. Gardaí seized drugs including cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and cannabis during the raid.

The warehouse has been sealed off for forensic examination, said gardaí.

Two men escape helicopter crash

Two men narrowly escaped a helicopter crash last night after their aircraft hit powerlines near Newtownmountkennedy.

The helicopter came down in a field.

Witnesses said they heard a loud bang as the helicopter hit powerlines, and saw two men running away from "a ball of flames" as fire engulfed the helicopter, described by air accident investigation unit as an Enstrom F28 light training aircraft.

The two men were from north Wicklow, according to Department of Transport officials.

Derry police seek crashed car owner

Police in Derry were last evening searching for a Co Donegal woman whose car was found overturned on to its roof on the outskirts of the city yesterday morning.

The registered owner of the green Renault Megane is Ms Elaine McAteer from the townland of Ballylar in the Co Donegal peninsula of Fanad. She was last seen leaving her home at 7pm on Wednesday.

The car was found overturned in a swampy area in Campsie, just yards off the main Derry to Limavady road yesterday at 8.20am.

"Initially we feared that the driver could have been trapped under the car but thankfully that was not the case, ",said a PSNI spokesman.

Former prisoner found dead

A former prisoner was found dead from a suspected heroin overdose in Northern Ireland yesterday. Denis Dunlop, in his late 30s and released from jail at the end of last month after serving a sentence for theft, was the second victim thought to have died from the lethal substance within days in Ballymena, Co Antrim.

Community leaders and addict support services warned that up to 550 heroin-type addicts were at risk.Mr Dunlop, who lived in the Doury Road Estate in the town, was known to addict support workers. Neighbours described him as a quiet man. - (PA)

Girl (13) held for burglary gets bail

A 13-year-old girl arrested for burgling elderly people's homes has been remanded on continuing bail by the Dublin Children's Court pending directions from the DPP.

The girl, who is originally from Romania, but now residing in Co Meath, is charged with burgling two homes, in Glenageary, Co Dublin, on Wednesday, July 18th last.

It is alleged she stole €175 in cash and €30 worth of phone credit from one house and about €200 from the other. Judge Thomas Fitzpatrick remanded the girl on bail to appear again next month.

easyJet to launch new Belfast routes

Budget airline easyJet is launching four new European routes as part of a major expansion to its Belfast operation, it announced yesterday.

From the autumn direct flights will take off from Belfast bound for Barcelona, Prague, Venice and Gdansk.
