Man in court over Clontarf house arson

A man has appeared in court in Dublin charged in relation to an arson attack on Thursday following which a man's body was found in a burnt-out house.

Alan Walsh (38), Edenmore Park, Coolock, was charged yesterday at a special sitting of Dublin District Court with criminal damage by arson.

An application for bail was refused after Judge Aeneus McCarthy heard more serious charges were likely in the case. He remanded Mr Walsh in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court on August 17th.

Woman who had miscarriage sought

Gardaí have urged a woman who suffered a miscarriage in a Dublin city B&B to contact them and seek medical help.

Gardaí from Store Street Garda station made the appeal after a foetus was discovered in a room in a B&B on Lower Gardiner Street yesterday afternoon.

In a statement, the Garda said: "The mother's wellbeing is our sole priority and we are anxious that she receive medical assistance."

Shots fired at Clondalkin house

Gardaí in west Dublin are investigating an incident in which two shots were fired into a house by a gunman who dropped his weapon while fleeing the scene.

Two shots were fired from a shotgun at 10.50pm on Thursday through the front windows of a house on Willow Avenue, Clondalkin.

There were two people in the house at the time but neither was injured.

President of seminary named

The Rev Prof Hugh Connolly has been appointed president of the national Catholic seminary, St Patrick's College in Maynooth. Taking up the post on September 1st, he will replace Mgr Dermot Farrell who has been appointed parish priest of Dunboyne, in his native Meath diocese.

Three held after Garda car chase

Three men were arrested in Roscommon early yesterday after their car was involved in a high-speed chase with two Garda vehicles following a suspected robbery.

Gardaí believe the men broke into the Eircom offices in Castlerea at about 3am yesterday. As they were preparing to leave, two Garda cars approached in an effort to arrest them.

However, the men sped from the scene and were chased for almost an hour by the pursuing Garda cars.

Woman missing in Galway

Divers with the Garda Water Unit are assisting in a search in Galway city for a Tipperary woman who has been missing for five days.

Bridget Hickey (26), who is from Clonmel, Co Tipperary, has not been seen since early on Tuesday morning. She was out with friends, but parted company with them in the Dominick Street area at about 3.30am.

Any information on Ms Hickey should be given to Mill Street Garda station in Galway at tel 091-538000.

Hotel for grounds of former convent

An Bord Pleanála has upheld a decision by Roscommon County Council to grant planning permission for a 27-bedroom hotel in the grounds of an 128-year-old convent once run by the Sisters of Charity in Ballaghaderreen.

Planning permission to Bridge Stock Ltd has been granted subject to 12 conditions.

Pakistani art show in Kilkenny

The Pakistani ambassador visited Kilkenny last night to open an art exhibition celebrating the 60th anniversary of his country's independence from Britain.

Toheed Ahmad opened Contemporary Painters of Pakistan at St Luke's Hospital.
