Man held over youth's death in Lanzarote

A man has been arrested in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands over the death of an 18-year-old Dublin man earlier this month, it was reported last night. RTÉ said a local man was being held in connection with Derek Cumiskey's death.

Mr Cumiskey died after he was attacked on the street as he returned from a night out with friends in the holiday resort of Puerto del Carmen on August 1st.

Three other men, all believed to be in their 20s, are still being sought by police on the island of Lanzarote.

Mr Cumiskey, of Townsend Street in Dublin, was with two Irish friends aged 16 and 27 when he was attacked outside a restaurant at 5.30am on August 1st.

Mr Cumiskey was a student with special needs who had just completed his Junior Certificate at St Augustine's School in Blackrock, Co Dublin.

The Department of Foreign Affairs could not immediately confirm the arrest but said the embassy in Madrid was checking the reports.

NI teenager dies in pool in Crete

A Northern Ireland teenager has been found dead in a swimming pool in Crete.

Brendan McCooey (18), Cullyhanna, Co Armagh, was discovered on Sunday morning after going on holiday with eight friends from the village.

The keen footballer had been there since Thursday and local councillor Terry Hearty said residents were devastated.

"It is unbelievable that this should happen and the entire community is shocked," he said.

He said the reason for the death was not known but police in Crete were investigating.

Victims of road crashes named

Gardaí have named the victims of two fatal road crashes at the weekend.

Kenneth Carroll (46) died on Sunday following a collision between his motorcycle and a car at Dalystown, near Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to contact Mullingar Garda station at 044-9384000.

Meanwhile, the woman who died in a crash outside Naas on Saturday was named as Sarah Fitzgerald (19) of Two Mile House.

Youth injured in Dublin cliff fall

A Belgian youth suffered extensive head injuries yesterday evening in a fall from cliffs on Ireland's Eye. The 16-year-old and a friend were climbing on the "Stack", a large rock formation on the island's cliffs, when he fell 200ft and landed 16ft above sea level.

The friend raised the alarm and a Coast Guard helicopter winched the boy from the cliffs. He was last night transferred to Tallaght hospital.
