Garda appeal after girl (17) alleges rape
A 17-year-old girl from Co Clare was being examined at the sexual assault treatment unit in Limerick last night following an alleged rape in Kilrush in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The teenager, who had been celebrating her Leaving Cert results with friends, was discovered in Moore Street between 2am and 3am by a Garda patrol.
The young woman alleged to gardaí that she had been sexually assaulted by three men, thought to be foreign nationals.
Supt Declan Brogan confirmed last night that the young woman had made a formal complaint yesterday afternoon about an incident.
He appealed for anyone who was in the Moore Street area in the early hours of Thursday morning and who saw anything suspicious to come forward.
Five shots fired into house
Gardaí at Fitzgibbon Street, Dublin, are investigating a shooting incident which occurred at Seán McDermott Street at about 5.45am yesterday morning.
Five shots were fired at a house. Three went through a ground floor window and two went through the front door. The house was occupied at the time but nobody was injured.
The culprit is believed to have been wearing a black tracksuit with a hood and a red face mask.
€½m worth of cannabis seized
Cannabis with a street value of over € million was seized by Customs officers and gardaí in two separate operations in Wexford and Cork yesterday.
Over 20kg of cannabis resin was discovered in a UK-registered car that arrived in Rosslare, Co Wexford, on board a ferry from Cherbourg. The drugs have an estimated street value of over €160,000.
A man and a woman from Dundalk are being held at Wexford Garda station.
A further 40kg of herbal cannabis, with a street value of €400,000, was seized in Cork. The drugs were concealed in a suite of furniture that had arrived from South Africa.
A man has been arrested and is being held at Mayfield Garda station in Cork.
Diversions on M50 for weekend
Motorists are advised that there will be traffic diversions on the M50 this weekend. Traffic coming from Leixlip will not be able to turn right on to the M50 southbound between 10pm tonight and 6am on Monday.
Traffic coming from Leixlip and the west heading towards the city should follow signposts for a diversion via the Fonthill Road. Vehicles weighing less than three tonnes may use the Outer Ring Road.
Seminar on arts and spirituality
A major seminar on The Arts and Spirituality will take place over next weekend in Manresa, the Jesuit Centre of Spirituality at Dollymount in Dublin.
Beginning on Friday next, August 24th, speakers will include Fr Michael Paul Gallagher SJ, film director and writer, Peter Sheridan, poet Aidan Mathews, artist and theologian Alfonse Borysewicz, art historian Eileen Kane and composer Maeve Heaney.
