Man arrested over deathof woman
A 48-year-old man will appear in Dublin District Court this morning charged with the death of Jean Gilbert (46), of Laverna Dale, Carpenterstown, Dublin 15.
A mother of three, she died in her home as a result of stab wounds, according to gardaí.
The man was arrested and questioned yesterday. He remained in custody over night at Blanchardstown Garda station, pending his court appearance this morning.
22,000 new vehicles on roads
There were almost 22,000 new vehicles on Irish roads last month, new figures revealed yesterday. The number of new cars bought rose to 15,745 in July, with Toyota, Ford and Volkswagen the best selling manufacturers, making up more than a third of all the vehicles licenced.
Between January and July more than 200,000 new vehicles were purchased, including 154,718 new cars.
The Central Statistics Office revealed that the amount of new cars rose in July by 273 from June, and was up 863 compared to the same time last year. The figures show the number of all new vehicles licensed during July was 21,863, up 9.4 per cent on 2006.
The highest number of new private cars were Toyota 2,330, followed by Ford 2,086, Volkswagen 1,705, Opel 1,535, Nissan 1,433 and Peugeot 807.
Bord Gáis workers injured in fire
Two contractors working for Bord Gáis were injured yesterday during a roadside fire at a gas main.
The contractors suffered burns to the hands and face after the fire at Oscar Traynor Road in Coolock, north Dublin.
Three units of the Fire Brigade attended and the workers were taken to hospital. Bord Gáis has launched an investigation into the accident.
