Mother and daughter (11) rescued at sea
A mother and daughter were rescued off the Dublin coast yesterday after the inflatable dinghy they were on was blown out to sea.
A lifeboat spokesman said they had been playing in shallow water at the south beach, Skerries, at about 9.30am when the wind picked up and pushed them out towards Colt Island.
The woman's partner swam out to try to reach them but was forced back to shore, where he raised the alarm. With the help of a buoyancy aid, the man made a second successful attempt to reach the 11-year-old girl, who had jumped from the dinghy. The Skerries RNLI lifeboat rescued the woman.
Drowned rescuers honoured at beach
Prayers were said on the beach at Owenahincha in west Cork last night to mark the first anniversary of the drowning of two men who had gone to the assistance of struggling swimmers, writes Olivia Kelleher
The two Cork men, Peter O'Keeffe (36) and Jonathan Herlihy (22), were posthumously awarded gold medals by Comhairle na Mire Gaile - the Deeds of Bravery Council.
Jonathan and Peter, who did not know each other, were strolling down the Co Cork beach when they heard a couple's calls for help. The men were swept out to sea during the rescue operation.
Gardaí seize drugs worth €10,000
Gardaí in Galway have seized heroin worth about €10,000 in the east of the city.
A man in his 20s was arrested following the seizure on Saturday afternoon.
He was taken to Mill Street Garda station but was later released and a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Name released of road crash victim
Gardaí have released the name of the woman who was killed in a road crash on the N17 at Claregalway last Tuesday morning.
She was Eileen O'Halloran (66) from Summerfield, Cahergowan, Claregalway, Co Galway.
The pedestrian was struck by a car at about 9.30am.
Memorial to children blessed
A 30-year campaign to erect a memorial to children who were buried in unconsecrated graves in a Co Galway town finally ended at the weekend.
A memorial stone was erected and blessed in St Laurence's Fields, Loughrea, in memory of unrecorded generations of infants who were buried in a site there.
The project was carried out by the Loughrea Environmental and Tidy Town group and brought to an end a campaign which started in the mid-1970s.
Infants who died before they were baptised were buried at the unconsecrated site from medieval times to the 20th century.
Man charged with Cork robbery
A Dublin man has been remanded in custody after he was charged over the weekend with an armed robbery at a leisure centre in Cork in which two females were threatened at gunpoint.
Gavin Martin (27) with an address at Cois Coille, Loughlinstown Drive, Loughlinstown, Co Dublin, was charged at a special sitting of Cork District Court on Saturday night with robbery of €2,700 from two female members of staff at Leeside Leisure, Winthrop Street, Cork, on August 30th.Gardaí objected to bail.
