Gas terminal plan 'fast-tracked'

A private proposal to build the country's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal "is strategic infrastructure" and can be fast-tracked, An Bord Pleanála has decided.

Shannon LNG, a subsidiary of the US company Hess LNG, unveiled its plans to build a €400 million LNG import terminal at a deep water site between the villages of Ballylongford and Tarbert on the Shannon estuary, Co Kerry, more than a year ago.

As it is now regarded as a strategic development and of national importance, it will go directly to the board for decision, and not to the local planning authority first.

Preliminary meetings and consultations have taken place between the board's inspectors and the company.

The full application, with an environmental impact statement, will be sent to the board. The normal statutory period of 18 weeks before a decision is handed down will apply.
