Man killed sleeping in bin named
The homeless man who was crushed to death when a commercial bin he had been sleeping in was loaded on to a refuse collection truck, has been named as Kevin Fitzpatrick from Derbyshire in England.
The 36 year old had been living rough in Ireland for the past seven years. He arrived in Limerick late last Thursday night and was found by workers at a large recycling facility on Monday morning.
Mr Fitzpatrick had taken refuge in a commercial bin last Sunday evening when temperatures dropped. The bin was loaded onto a refuse collection truck on Monday morning and taken to the Mr Binman facility in Grange, Co Limerick.
A Garda spokesman confirmed last night that the family was informed late on Wednesday night by police in Derbyshire.
Car Free Day labelled a 'sham'
Car Free Day, which takes place in Dublin tomorrow has been condemned as "sham" by the Dublin City Business Association, because of the Government's failure to provide free public transport for the event, writes Olivia Kelly.
Chief executive of the association Tom Coffey said the event was badly conceived, counterproductive, and was a "fig leaf" or token gesture hiding the lack of commitment by Government to encouraging people to use public transport.
"If the Government and Dublin Transportation Office were serious about encouraging people to use public transport they would provide free public transport on the day itself."
Cars will be banned from parts of the city's central business district and the streets used for "family-friendly events". Parnell Square east, Merrion Square west and the main road through Herbert Park, Donnybrook, will be closed to vehicles until teatime.
Man in identity inquiry given bail
A Lithuanian whose detention, following a case of mistaken identity, was being legally challenged has been granted bail by the High Court. On Monday Sergejus Kuzmicius (48), who has been staying at a hostel in Dublin, was remanded in custody by District Judge Thomas Fitzpatrick.
He had appeared in court after he had been charged with minor public order offences.Yesterday at the High Court, counsel said the DPP had consented to Mr Kuzmicius being released on bail. Mr Justice Hedigan remanded Mr Kuzmicius on bail on his own bond of €100.
Man killed fishing in Norway
The body of an Irish man who drowned while on holiday in Norway has been recovered from the sea.
Michael Whelan (36) from Doon, Co Limerick, was on a fishing expedition last weekend. It is believed he died in a freak accident while he was fishing off the coastline.
Fishing vessels to be raised
The salvage of two fishing vessels which sank off the southeast coast with the loss of seven lives is expected to take place within the next month, writes Lorna Siggins. The salvage of the Pere Charles and Maggie B which sank in January 2007 and March 2006, will be carried out by Irish Diving Contractors Ltd and the wrecks taken to Arklow, Co Wicklow.
