Council blocking sports site - TD
Residents of one of the fastest-growing suburbs of Galway city are being denied a €13.5 million sports complex because the city council will not agree to it, local TD Frank Fahey said.
Deputy Fahey says that the €13.5 million complex could have been built in 12 months for €1.4 million with private sector involvement.
The latest proposal to be rejected was "extremely attractive from the city council's point of view", according to Deputy Fahey.
The plans include a 25m pool, fitness area and a community centre. A Galway City Council spokesman said it was "exploring all options to determine the most efficient way of delivering this facility to Knocknacarra".
