Elderly couple released from custody
Two pensioners arrested in connection with the murder of a 25-year-old father of three in Limerick earlier this week are no longer in Garda custody.
The man (81) and his wife, who is in her mid-70s, were arrested by gardaí investigating the murder of Gareth Grant, who was shot just yards from his home on St Ita's Street, St Mary's Park, Limerick, last Monday night.
The elderly couple were arrested on Tuesday night after gardaí recovered a semi-automatic handgun, believed to be the murder weapon, during searches carried out in St Mary's Park estate. The pensioners were released without charge late on Wednesday night along with a man (20) who was arrested an hour after Grant was murdered.
A Garda spokesman confirmed yesterday that a file was being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
More time given to prepare case
The State has been granted further time to prepare the book of evidence in the case of three youths charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man in north Dublin last year.
James Donaghue (26), from Coolock, Dublin, was stabbed after a row broke out outside his grandmother's home, where he had been attending a birthday party.
Two 17-year-old youths, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, and Brian Joyce (20), with an address at Carton Road, Poppintree, Ballymun, Dublin, had earlier been charged at the Dublin Children's Court with the murder of Mr Donaghue on September 10th last year. They have also been charged with producing a knife and engaging in violent disorder.
Judge Ann Ryan remanded them to appear again in four weeks. One of the defendants is in custody; the other two are on bail.
Freed rapist re-arrested
Convicted rapist Eamon Foley was told by the Magistrates' Court in Derry yesterday that he would have to remain in custody for another two weeks before he could apply to be freed from jail.
Foley (47), from Castlederg, Co Tyrone, was released from prison earlier this week after serving eight years of a 16-year sentence for the rape of Mary-Anne McLaughlin (91) in 1999.
After he was released from Magilligan Prison, Foley was rearrested by police officers who said he had failed to provide them with a suitable address.
Foley was remanded in custody until October 25th.
