Limerick bouncer trial set for Monday
The trial of four men on trial for killing a nightclub bouncer in Limerick in November 2002 has been adjourned until Monday.
Gary Campion (24), Pineview Gardens, Moyross, Limerick, John (27) and Dessie (23) Dundon, Ballinacara Weston, Co Limerick, and Anthony Kelly (50), Kilrush, Co Clare, all plead not guilty to murdering Brian Fitzgerald (34), in November 2002 at Brookhaven Road, Mill Road, Corbally, Limerick.
Mr Justice Peter Charlton warned the jurors that they should not read any crime reports whatsoever for the duration of the trial as well as news articles concerning the trail or "colour" pieces on the trial.
The trial is expected to last up to 10 weeks at the Central Criminal Court sitting at Cloverhill.
Chawke accused refuses to plead
A man accused of shooting publican Charlie Chawke has refused to enter a plea on the grounds that he believes that he is illegally before the court.
A jury has been sworn in for the trial which will begin today in the Circuit Criminal Court before Judge Pat McCartan.
A plea of not guilty to five charges was entered on behalf of Frank Ward (51), Knockmore Avenue, Tallaght, who is defending himself. He denies the shooting and robbery of Mr Chawke at his pub, the Goat Inn, Dundrum, in October 2003.
Drug dealer may have absconded
A convicted drug dealer who was due to be sentenced yesterday could now be in Spain, according to a judge at the Dublin District Court.
Darren Gilligan (31) pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine with intent to supply last November.
Judge John Coughlan issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for sentencing. The judge said there was an indication that Gilligan was thinking of going to Spain. Gilligan, a father of two, with addresses in Mulhuddart and Lucan in west Dublin, is the son of convicted drug dealer John Gilligan.
Man denies IRA membership
A former heroin addict told the Special Criminal Court yesterday that his former employer asked him to call his home and threaten whoever answered the phone.
Martin Forsythe, Killiney, Dublin, was giving evidence in the trial of Joseph Clarke (37), Santry Avenue, Dublin, who denies membership of the IRA in January this year.
Mr Forsythe told Diarmaid McGuinness SC, defending, that Mr Clarke had extorted money from the security business of a man he used to work for.
Last March or April, this man asked him to call his home and threaten whoever answered the phone. Asked whether his former boss told him why he wanted him to do this, Mr Forsythe replied: "He said it would look better for the guards."
Warden assault case adjourned
A security guard accused of assaulting a litter warden and throwing a rock through his van had his case adjourned for hearing in Tallaght Court.
Darren Lester (40), Brookview Close, Tallaght, is charged with assaulting Peter Lynch and damaging his South Dublin County Council vehicle in Tallaght last November. He is also charged with interfering with a litter warden.
