Clubs should not stock Red Bull - judge

Nightclub owners here should not stock Red Bull as it has been banned elsewhere in the EU, a District Court judge has said after hearing of an assault which occurred outside a Galway city nightclub.

Judge Mary Fahy said: "It should be brought to the notice of all nightclub owners that Red Bull has been banned" in some other EU countries and "if people are running nightclubs they should not stock it.

"I only learned that recently . . . and responsible licensees should not stock it," Judge Fahy said of the caffeine drink which clubbers sometimes mix with vodka and other spirits.

Liam Hough (23), Grattan Court, Fr Griffin Road Lower, Salthill, denies causing serious harm to the knee of Warwick Hotel bouncer John Mullin during a fracas outside the hotel following a live "death metal and devil music" concert on May 27th, 2006.

Another bouncer Samir Ourfali said "He [ Hough] was irrational. He would not listen. He was hyper. It was more than Red Bull, he was that hyper. He was drinking from a pint glass . . . he was one of the most hyper people I have ever come across."

Hough said in evidence he had drunk a can of Dutch Gold with friends before going to the concert and had drunk three pints of beer during the night.

Judge Fahy said that from the video evidence shown to the court, Hough was totally out of control.

She fined him €750 for common assault and €250 for breaching the peace on the same occasion.

Man charged over woman's fire death

A man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with the death of a woman who died in a fire at her home in Co Tipperary last April.

The charges arise from the death of Anne Marie O'Neill, Elm Park, Clonmel, on April 27th last.

Ms O'Neill, who was in her early 50s, died after a fire engulfed the Co Tipperary home she shared with her husband Pat.

Jason Murphy (34), Elm Park, was also charged with the arson of Ms O'Neill's family home and of a Hyundai car.

Judge Terence Finn remanded Mr Murphy in custody to Limerick prison.

Fraud charge man got credit card job

A man who fled Ireland in 2004 while on fraud charges, but who returned under a false identity to work in the MBNA credit card company, in Carrick-on-Shannon has been refused bail.

Hakeem Bashorum (32) from Nigeria, with addresses at Carrick-on- Shannon, Co Leitrim, and Monasterevin, Co Kildare, where his wife lives, worked for MBNA as "Martin Kerry" before his arrest in August.

Sgt Oliver Hickey objected to bail because he said Mr Bashorum was known under at least three separate identities and he believed he would not stand trial if allowed bail.

Burglar is jailed for six years

A man who burgled four Glasnevin homes in Dublin in one day has been given a six-year sentence by Judge Desmond Hogan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Graham Kavanagh (35), Barry Park, Finglas pleaded guilty to breaking into four houses on September 26th, 2006.

The court heard that Kavanagh, a chronic drug addict, has been in and out of jail since he was 16. Judge Hogan said Kavanagh, who has 43 previous convictions, was a 'habitual criminal.
