FG calls for more school psychologists

Half the schools in the State do not have access to psychological assessments for children who may have attention deficit disorder or learning disabilities, according to Fine Gael.

The party is to put a private member's motion before the Dáil this week calling on the Government to increase the number of State school psychologists and extend the service to every school.

"Parents and schools are increasingly turning to charitable organisations to get their children psychologically assessed because the State system is so badly resourced," said Brian Hayes, the party's education spokesman.

Ó Cuív lights up Grafton Street

Dublin's Grafton Street is having a green Christmas this year, with new environmentally friendly Christmas lights decorating the city's main shopping street.

The new energy-efficient lights, which use 75 per cent less electricity than standard outdoor Christmas lights used in previous Grafton Street displays, were switched on yesterday by Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív.

Rhys Meyers arrested at airport

Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers was arrested at Dublin airport yesterday when he was refused permission to board a British Midland aircraft at 2.30pm, writes Conor Lally.

He was taken to Whitehall Garda station and held there for a short time but was released on his own bail after being charged under Section 4 and Section 6 of the Public Order Act.

The actor is to appear in court at a later date to answer the charges.

RTÉ stands over cocaine claim

RTÉ said yesterday it was standing over the content of the High Society television programmes in which it was claimed that a Government Minister had admitted to being a regular cocaine user.

A spokeswoman for the station said no audiotape had been made of the admission but RTÉ relied on the extensive contemporaneous notes taken by the author of the book on which the programme was based.

Garda appeal over missing girl (15)

Gardaí from Ronanstown, Co Dublin, are seeking assistance in tracing Diane Travers (15), who has been missing since Wednesday evening, November 14th.

She is 5ft 5in tall, of average build and has long black hair and blue eyes. She was wearing a red and white T-shirt, red track suit bottoms with a white stripe, white trainers and a Timberland hooded top.

World film premiere in Cork

The world premiere of the award-winning new Irish film Strength and Honourwill take place in Cork this evening.

The film's stars, Michael Madsen, Vinnie Jones, Patrick Bergin, Finbar Furey and Gail Fitzpatrick, are all due to be in attendance at the screening at the Cork Opera House, with proceeds going to the Marymount Hospice.
