Women found in brothel deported
Two women have been sent back to Estonia after being arrested at a Limerick brothel less than 24 hours after arriving in Ireland, writes Kathryn Hayes.
The arrests were made after gardaí uncovered a prostitution racket being operated on the internet by criminals who are flying in "escorts" from eastern Europe and South America.
Kristin Pukk (26) and Mare Koller (30) had been in Ireland less than 48 hours before their appearance at a special sitting of Limerick District Court on Saturday. The court heard that the brothel was being organised through a website.
The two Estonian women were arrested at an apartment on William Street in Limerick city at 10pm last Friday. They pleaded guilty at a special court sitting the following day to permitting the premises to be used as a brothel.
Det Garda Dave Bourke of Roxboro station said they were arrested following a surveillance operation. A total of €400 in cash was recovered by gardaí.
Insp Séamus Gallagher said the women had travelled to Ireland of their own free will and said it was not a trafficking case.
After hearing undertakings that the women would return to Estonia Judge Aeneas McCarthy agreed to impose the Probation Act. He also ordered that €300 of the money be forfeited.
