Former garda gets 12 months for child porn
A former garda was given a suspended 12-month prison sentence yesterday for having child pornography images stored on two laptop computers.
The estranged wife of Jarleth Heverin (43), formerly of Tuam Road, Dunmore, Co Galway, who now lives in respite accommodation at Cul Ard, Wellpark, in Galway city, reported the offence to gardaí in May 2004 after she discovered several images of child pornography on a computer the accused had given her in 2003.
Heverin,who suffers from a progressive form of Multiple Sclerosis, pleaded guilty last May to a charge of being in possession of child pornography but claimed in court yesterday that he had downloaded the images in an attempt to infect the internet child porn web sites he had accessed with a virus.
Judge Raymond Groarke said he would not impose a custodial sentence as medical reports concurred the accused was seriously ill. The sentence was suspended on condition Heverin have no more access to child pornography and that he make his computer available at any time for future Garda examination to ensure that order is complied with.
The accused was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years.
A man who told his partner's 13-year-old daughter he was only wasting his time if she didn't enjoy him raping her has been jailed for eight years by Mr Justice Paul Carney at the Central Criminal Court.
The 43-year-old Dublin man pleaded guilty to two charges of rape and five of sexual assault of the now 18-year-old victim on dates from October 2003 to March 2004 in a north city suburban area. He cannot be identified for legal reasons.
A mother of two stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife after he viciously attacked and beat her, her two children and her mother, Cork Circuit Criminal Court heard yesterday.
Dilorom Sulaymanov, a native of Uzbekistan, is pleading not guilty to the manslaughter of her husband, Abduazim Sulaymanov, at their rented home at Pinewood, Ballinlough Road, Cork, on January 6th, 2007.The case continues today at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.
UK's most wanted held in Holland
An Irishman who killed a policeman and fled to Ireland after escaping from a British jail has been caught after 13 years on the run.
James Hurley (45) escaped while being transferred to a London jail by prison van in 1994.
He was serving life for the murder of off-duty PC Francis Mason during a security van raid in Hemel Hempstead in 1988.
He was arrested 11 days ago during a raid on a house in The Hague, Netherlands. Hurley was listed as one of Scotland Yard's most wanted, and £30,000 (€42,000) had been offered for his capture.
He is expected to face trial in the Netherlands on drugs charges before being returned to the UK to finish his life sentence.
The sentencing of a Limerick man who admitted the illegal possession of 149 rounds of ammunition was adjourned in the Special Criminal Court yesterday until December 4th.
Alan Ryan (34) of Tullovin Bridge, Croom, Co Limerick, was arrested at Heuston Station, Dublin, in August 2005.
Ryan pleaded guilty in November last year to the charge but the court adjourned sentencing and remanded him on bail under the condition that he was monitored for drug-taking.
The court heard that Ryan had a heroin problem at one time but has been drugs free for some time.
