Man charged with killing fiancee

The fiance of Wendy McAteer (17), whose body was found in Limavady, Co Derry, last Wednesday night, appeared in court in Derry over the weekend charged with her murder.

The defendant is Terry Phillip Whiting, (30), from Robertson Crescent in Limavady, the same address as the victim.

Her body was found at Backburn Path in Limavady shortly after 10pm on Wednesday. Whiting was remanded in custody to appear on December 20th.

Plumber charged over Kalashnikov

A Dublin man was charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court on Saturday with having a Kalashnikov assault rifle and ammunition on Thursday and with membership of the INLA.

Denis Dwyer (22) a plumber, of Drumcarra Avenue, Jobstown, Tallaght was charged with possession of an assault rifle and 21 rounds of .223 ammunition at Camden Street. He was remanded in custody.

No charges over cocaine arrest

Gardaí have released without charge a 23-year-old man held in connection with the seizure of 2kg of heroin in Clane, Co Kildare on Saturday. The drugs have a potential street value of €400,000, according to gardaí who said a file was being prepared for the DPP.

A second man, aged 29, remained in custody last night. Cocaine worth an estimated €5,000 was also seized.

FF poll results a worry - Ó Cuív

Minister for Rural Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív has said the latest drop in Fianna Fáil support in the Sunday Business Postpoll published yesterday is "very serious".

The latest Sunday Business Post/Red C monthly tracking poll shows Fianna Fáil's support at 32 per cent, just one point ahead of Fine Gael, which gained four points. Labour's support is up three points to 13 per cent, while the Greens are up two points to 9 per cent.

Sinn Féin has dropped by 1 per cent to 7 per cent; while the Progressive Democrats have stayed at 2 per cent with Independents dropping to 7 per cent.

Gun found after robbery attempt

Three men were arrested and a gun recovered in a Garda follow-up operation after shots from a handgun were fired during an incident at Liam Mellows Park, Finglas, early on Sunday morning. Three shots were fired but no one was injured during an alleged attempted theft of two motorcycles.

Canyoners risk lives to get help

A Dublin woman was trapped on a ledge at the bottom of a 20 metre ravine for almost six hours and was airlifted to hospital while five others had also to be rescued, after a canyoning expedition in Co Clare.

The group of eight had been canyoning along the Aille River near Doolin on Saturday when one woman fell several feet onto a ledge below. A second person climbed down to assist her while two other members of the group risked their lives by floating along the river to raise the alarm.
