Garda did not know second man missing

Gardaí say they called off a search after the first of two brothers who drowned in Athlone was found on Saturday because they were not aware the second man was missing.

Daniel and Anthony Dowdall, from Rathgarrett, Tyrellspass, Co Westmeath, died in what is being described by gardaí as a tragic accident. One of the men fell into the water at The Docks in Athlone on Friday night. Reports suggest his brother attempted to rescue him.

The body of Daniel (41) was recovered at 11.40am on Saturday. The body of Anthony (39) was not recovered until 11.30am on Sunday.

Retailers fined over paracetamol

Retailers were fined between €1,000 and €1,200 for selling too much of the painkiller paracetamol in one transaction.

The regulations state that retailers can only sell one packet of paracetamol at one time because of the risk of self-harm or a potential overdose. The outlets fined are all in Dublin: Spar on Cumberland Street; Centra Quick Stop on Cathal Brugha Street; Griffins Londis on O'Connell Street; and Amdal Ltd, trading as Spar, on Upper O'Connell Street.

Fatal incident as car driven off pier

Gardaí are not seeking anyone else in relation to an incident at Cahore Pier, near Ballygarrett, Co Wexford, yesterday in which a man died.

Locals raised the alarm when they saw a car driving off the pier at 8.15am. Rescue services were at the scene 15 minutes later, and by 2pm they recovered the man's body and the car from the water.

Best foot forward for Horseshoe Bar

One of Dublin's best-known bars celebrated its 50th birthday yesterday.

The Horseshoe Bar at the Shelbourne Hotel has attracted a variety of VIPs, politicians, actors and playwrights since it opened its doors in 1957.

The bar took its name from the shape of its counter but it is also associated with the equestrian fraternity.

Inquiry into man's death at recycling firm

Gardaí and Health and Safety Authority officials are investigating the death of a man at a recycling company in Clondalkin, Dublin, yesterday evening.

The man, in his 40s, was fatally injured when he was crushed by a truck at the Merrywell Industrial Estate at about 5.30pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Tallaght hospital, where a postmortem is expected to take place today.

Limerick honours veteran journalist

Veteran Limerick journalist Arthur Quinlan was recognised by Limerick County Council last night for his career in the region which has spanned more than 50 years.

During that time he interviewed many world leaders, including emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and US president Harry Truman.

He taught Cuban leader Fidel Castro how to make an Irish coffee.

Council cathaoirleach Cllr Kevin Sheehan said Mr Quinlan's professional integrity was the cornerstone of his success.
