Schoolboy remanded on murder charge
A schoolboy charged with murder over the fatal stabbing of a Leaving Certificate student last May was served with the book of evidence at the Dublin Children's Court yesterday.
A 17-year-old youth, who cannot be identified because he is a juvenile, was charged with the murder of Seán Nolan (18), at Waterloo Road in Dublin 4.
Judge Bryan Smyth remanded the teenager to appear again in the Children's Court next week.
Brady to give newspaper lecture
Former editor of The Irish Times Conor Brady will deliver a lecture at the National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin tomorrow at 7pm.
Mr Brady, who is now a member of The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission, will give a talk entitled "Up with the Times" after his book of the same name about his period in charge of the newspaper.
Man with heroin jailed for 11 years
A man has received an 11 year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for having heroin valued €132,000.
John Ward (27), of Cedarbrook Walk, Ballyfermot, Dublin, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin and being in possession of firearms and ammunition.
Brothel-keeper to be sentenced
A city centre brothel-keeper will be sentenced next March at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court after admitting his role.
David Cowley (42) with an address at Loughlinstown Shopping Centre, Loughlinstown, Dublin 18, pleaded guilty to acting or assisting in the management of a brothel on Bachelor's Walk on December 9th, 2005.
Off-licence fined for under-age sale
News and Brews off-licence, Old Blessington Road, Tallaght, which sold cans of beer to a 17-year-old youth, will have to close down for two hours and pay a fine of €500.
After an appeal by the Duffy Group, Judge Joseph Matthews yesterday reduced the punishment of two days closure and €750 on the grounds that it was a first offence.
Man remanded on murder charge
The man charged with the murder of Ciara Ní Chathmhaoil , a 22-year-old mother-of-one found with multiple stab wounds, was remanded in custody until December 14th at Cloverhill District Court yesterday.
Gordon Molloy (23), of Ballinakill, Ballickmoyler, Co Laois, is charged with the murder at her home in Brownshill, Carlow, on November 12th, 2007.
He will appear again before Cloverhill District Court on December 14th.
Phones seized in inquiry into Cork murder
Gardaí investigating the murder of a father of four in north Cork have seized a quantity of mobile phones and SIM cards for analysis.
A number of searches were carried out along the Cork-Kerry border over the weekend by gardaí investigating the shooting of convicted drug dealer 35-year-old David Brett.
Brett's body was found outside Foyle National School near Ballydesmond on May 21st last.
No one has been arrested in relation to the investigation.
Interim examiner appointed to firms
The High Court has appointed an interim examiner to two related companies which claimed a tax adviser had allegedly provided false certificates saying payments had been made to the Revenue Commissioners.
The application by REL Refrigeration Group Ltd and Refrigeration Engineering Ltd, Hebron Industrial Estate, Kilkenny, for the protection of an interim examiner was opposed by the Revenue Commissioners. The Revenue said the companies, which provide refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, could still be operated as profitable concerns.
The court heard the companies have shortfalls in funds totalling €4 million.
Two held after Limerick arms find
A teenage boy and a woman in her 30s were being questioned by gardaí in Limerick last night following the discovery of three firearms on the south side of the city.
A rifle and two shotguns were seized by gardaí during searches carried out in the O'Malley Park area of Southill.
Coroner concerned at inquest delay
A coroner expressed concern yesterday over the ongoing delay in conducting an inquest into the death of a 22-year-old Co Mayo woman who was killed almost three years ago when her van was in collision with another vehicle near Mulranny.
John O'Dwyer pointed out at a hearing in Castlebar that December 22nd, the third anniversary of the death of Aisling Gallagher, a student from Askill, Achill Island, was approaching. It was important that the inquest be held as expeditiously as possible.
He fixed May 19th next as the date for the inquest after being told by Tom Dowling, an inspector with the Health and Safety Authority, that the authority's legal department will send a file to the DPP at the end of next month after what had been "an extremely complex investigation".
20,000 Boyzone Dublin tickets sold
More than 20,000 tickets were sold yesterday for the Dublin concert of recently reformed pop act Boyzone, writes Steven Carroll.
The concert takes place at Dublin's RDS on Saturday, June 28th next year. It will be the group's first Irish concert since January 2000.
Meanwhile, English rock act Radiohead have confirmed they will play an Irish concert next June as part of their 2008 European tour.
They will play at Dublin's Malahide Castle on Saturday, June 7th.
