Man jailed for part in cocaine smuggling
A man has been given a five- year sentence for his part in a north Co Dublin drugs deal involving cocaine which was hidden in a lorry-load of quilts in Lusk.
Brian Thompson (48), Croxteth, Liverpool, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to conspiring with others in the possession of cocaine worth €600,000 on September 14th, 2006.
Judge Katherine Delahunt took into account his current drug-free status in imposing a five-year sentence, with the final four suspended. She asked that he be housed in a drug-free wing.
Addict gets 10 years for robberies
A Dublin heroin addict who carried out an 18-month spate of robberies and burglaries at a cost of €10,000 to his victims, has been given a 10-year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Vincent McNally (25), Hazelcourt Grove, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to two robberies, four burglaries, an aggravated house burglary and dangerous driving between January 2005 and July 2006. He had 83 previous convictions.
Judge Katherine Delahunt said McNally's background "made tragic reading" and she noted he had expressed remorse. She imposed consecutive sentences totalling 10 years but suspended the final two years on conditions.
Man faces child porn sentence
A man is to be sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for possession of more than 1,000 images of child pornography.
Radoslaw Psuj (34), Pelletstown Manor, Ashtown, pleaded guilty to possessing the images at his former home in North Portland Street and at the Cybernet internet café on the North Circular Road in July 2006.
Judge Katherine Delahunt ordered him to be placed on the sex offenders register and remanded him on continuing bail until his sentence date next year.
Assault sentence adjourned
Sentence on a Louth man for assaulting a prison officer at Cloverhill District Court has been adjourned by Judge Tony Hunt who wants to hear direct evidence from the victim on the injuries he claims he suffered.
Robert Maguire (28), St Helena's Park, Dundalk, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assaulting prison officer Conor Cohen in May 2005.
Maguire pleaded not guilty to causing the injuries Mr Cohen claimed in his victim impact statement.
Judge Hunt was told by Damien Colgan, prosecuting, that Mr Cohen would not be giving evidence "due to confidentiality" arising from his position. The judge said he could not pass sentence without hearing evidence of the claimed injuries directly from Mr Cohen.
Boxer's sentence adjourned
A junior boxing champion who struck out at two friends in the course of a robbery outside Shankill Dart station has been given a suspended sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Keith Wall (18), Rathsallagh Park, Shankill, pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery in December 2005. He has no previous convictions and is to be assessed for community service.
Judge Katherine Delahunt imposed a suspended 18- month sentence, ordered that €1,500 he had in court be paid to his victims and referred Wall to the Probation Service.
