Coroner's concern at drink deaths
A coroner has sought a meeting with members of the Polish community and other eastern Europeans to raise his concerns about the high number of drink driving and other alcohol related fatalities among foreign nationals.
Coroner for South Cork, Frank O'Connell said that he would like to meet with representatives of the local Polish community to express his concerns after a Polish man killed in a road traffic crash was found to be over three times the drink driving limit.
An inquest into the death of Stanislaw Marian Domagala (49) heard that he had a blood alcohol reading of .285 when he was killed on June 3. Mr Domagala - who worked in a factory in Ballyvourney in mid-Cork - was killed when he drove into a ditch.
Local Garda Supt Vincent Duggan said gardaí distribute road safety leaflets in Polish to many of the new arrivals in the area.
"No more than ourselves as disparate immigrants, drink has become a problem here and there is no doubt it is an issue," said Supt Duggan.
Thief (14) faked charity collection
A 14-year-old thief, who stole a woman's purse while he pretended to be collecting money for charity, has been remanded on bail pending sentence.
The Romanian boy pleaded guilty at the Children's Court to theft at Café En Seine restaurant, on Dawson Street, in Dublin, on September 28 last.
Judge Ann Ryan was told that the boy approached the woman who had been sitting at a table in the restaurant.
He stole her purse while she was filling out the charity fundraising card.
It contained €70 and credit cards, which were never recovered.
Judge Ryan adjourned sentencing the boy until February so a probation report can be produced.
City shooting inquest adjourned
An inquest into the death of a man who was shot dead in Dublin city centre as he walked home from work was adjourned at Dublin City Coroner's Court yesterday as Garda investigations in relation to his death are ongoing.
Raymond Collins (42) of Matt Talbot Court, Summerhill, was shot dead near the junction of Clonliffe Road and Clonliffe Avenue near Croke Park at about 5pm on the evening of November 14, 2006.
Coroner Dr Brian Farrell granted an adjournment until March 2008.
Suspended jail term for soldier
A soldier who attacked a man three days after he received a community service order for assault has again been given a suspended sentence again at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He was ordered to take anger management therapy.
Daniel Moylan (21) of Isolda Road, Ringsend pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Mr Ronan McKenna three days after he had been directed by Judge Desmond Hogan to carry out 240 hours community service in lieu of a two year prison sentence for another assault.
After reading what he called "a favourable probation report" and noting Moylan had paid €10,000 in compensation to his victim, Judge Hogan sentenced him to three years' suspended imprisonment on condition that he complete a further 240 hours community service and undergo anger management therapy.
