Death of baby investigated by Garda
The Garda in Tralee has confirmed it has begun an investigation into the death of a four-month-old baby boy who died in Kerry General Hospital in Tralee on Friday last, writes Anne Lucey.
Supt Pat Sullivan said the investigation was as a result of being notified by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster, after she had carried out a postmortem.
The baby, whose parents live in west Cork, was admitted to hospital on the previous Tuesday. The full results of the postmortem were awaited, Supt Sullivan said.
PSNI questions two men over man's murder
PSNI detectives were questioning two men last night on suspicion of the murder of a man in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim. Kevin Coiley (45), of Longlands Park, Newtownabbey, died at his home on Wednesday night.
He was at the Royal British Legion club in Newtownabbey during the evening and left with two others at about 11pm. He died shortly afterwards.
Mr Coiley may have got involved in a fight before he left the club, according to local sources.
Two killed in separate crashes
A man and a teenager died in road crashes yesterday morning. In the first, at 6am, two cars collided near Mullingar, Co Westmeath. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. In the second, a teenage boy was killed after a single-vehicle crash near Templemore, Co Tipperary.
The other man in the car was seriously injured and taken to Limerick Regional Hospital.
Man hit by Luas in critical condition
A man is in a critical condition at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, after he was struck by a Luas tram near Tallaght on Wednesday night.
The driver of the tram was taken to Tallaght hospital, where he was treated for shock.
No foul play in Cork death
There are no suspicious circumstances in the death of a Cork woman whose body was found in her apartment by a friend, writes Barry Roche.
Gardaí were called and a postmortem was carried out last night after the body of the woman (32) was found in her flat at Gerald Griffin Street. She may have been dead for a number of days.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Waterford are awaiting the results of toxicology tests on a father of two who was found dead at his home in Kilcohan. The man was named locally as David Cullen (26).
Luas fares set to rise by 4.15%
Luas fares with the exception of child fares and fares paid by smart card, are set to rise by an average of 4.15 per cent next year.
A standard peak-time, single-journey ticket will increase by 10 cent to €1.60. Most of the increases will take place from January 7th next. Thirty-day tickets will increase from February.
Skull discovered in wall of house
Gardaí are investigating the discovery of a skull during work on a 300-year-old house in Co Cork yesterday. The skull was discovered by builders in a wall of a house in Ballynoe. Gardaí believe the skull could be more than 100 years old.
