Fight MRSA with hygiene, says expert

An integrated approach which does not separate the issue of hygiene from medical care is the only way to tackle MRSA in our hospitals, the Welsh National Health Service's director of infection prevention and control has said, writes Hélène Hofman.

Speaking to six representatives of the Irish MRSA and families group during a visit to Wales and Vale Hospital in Cardiff, Dr Ian Hosain, who was educated at Trinity College Dublin, said it was impossible to reduce incidences of MRSA unless a system of management and accountability was introduced in Ireland.

"A sense of hygiene should become part of the mindset.

"A clean hospital lets staff know that you mean business when it comes to hygiene.

"In the end it's about the patients but also about protecting staff and visitors."

Information about injured man

Gardaí in Dublin have appealed for information about an incident in which an injured man in his 20s was discovered at the Hardwick Street-Frederick Court junction at 2.15am on August 20th.

He remains in a serious condition in hospital.

Gardaí at Fitzgibbon Street Garda station want to talk to a middle-aged man and woman who spoke with the ambulance crew prior to the young man's removal to hospital.

They also want to contact the person who rang Fitzgibbon Street Garda station to report the incident.

Gardaí rule out foul play

Gardaí in Cork have ruled out foul play following a postmortem on the body of a 24-year-old man found aboard a small fishing boat in Cork port.

They are awaiting the results of toxicology reports from Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster to establish the exact cause of the death.

Burglary might be on council CCTV

Gardaí in Co Clare are investigating a burglary at the head offices of Ennis Town Council early yesterday when thieves made off with cash and cheques of up to €25,000.

Gardaí hope to be able to download footage from internal CCTV cameras.

Boy who stole minibus in court

A 15-year-old boy who stole a minibus from a day centre which had a significant impact on the lives of 75 elderly people has been detained for two years. The young boy, who was supported in court by his family, had pleaded guilty at the Dublin Children's Court to unlawfully taking the minibus from the Glenview Lodge old people's day centre, in Tallaght, on September 30th last.

Judge Derek McVeigh imposed a two-year order detaining the teenager in Trinity House.

Mother appeals for missing son

A mother yesterday renewed an appeal for information on the whereabouts of her missing son who disappeared more than four months ago.

Mary Kelly has not seen her 18-year-old son Richard Kelly since he left home in O'Malley Park, Limerick, on April 23rd last.
