GARDA OMBUDSMAN commissioner Carmel Foley told Dublin City Coroner’s Court a file would go to the DPP in January regarding their inquiries following the death of a man who became unwell during an incident with gardaí.
William Kavanagh (58), of Edenmore Crescent, Raheny, Dublin, was pronounced dead at Beaumont Hospital on June 5th, 2009.
Ms Foley told an inquest hearing yesterday: “The investigation has been completed and the file is being reviewed internally within our office with a view to the file going the DPP.”
Ms Foley requested a three-month adjournment of the inquest into the death, which coroner Dr Brian Farrell granted. He adjourned the inquest to a date in March 2011. The coroner requested Ms Foley to keep his office informed if there are any developments.
Mr Kavanagh became unwell during an incident with gardaí in Bayside, Dublin, on the night of June 4th, 2009. Medical assistance was called for and he was attended at the scene and taken to Beaumont Hospital. A cause of death was not recorded following an application by the family’s solicitor Michael Finucane.
