A number of Independent TDs are meeting in Leinster House this afternoon to discuss possibly forming a technical group.
Several of the Independents have been elected on health-related issues and the formation of an alliance would give them a stronger footing in the Dáil.
The move would entitle the group access to private member's time and greater flexibility in raising issues on the Order of Business under the Dáil's standing orders.
Tipperary South TD, Mr Seamus Healy, who is organising the meeting, told ireland.comhe could not predict what would transpire at the meeting but the feasibility of forming such a group would be considered.
Dáil Standing Orders require a majority of non-aligned members to form a technical group. There are 25 non-aligned members in the newly-elected Dáil, meaning the proposed group would need at least 13 members.
Last week the Green Party and Sinn Féin called for reform of standing orders to give them full opposition party status.
Both parties indicated they would co-operate in seeking the required changes.
