Mr Frank Millar, a leading Independent unionist, has died in the Northern Ireland Hospice in Belfast. Mr Millar, who was 75, died of cancer. A former shipyard worker and shop steward, he was active in opposing the privatisation of Harland & Wolff in 1988.
He was elected to numerous posts, notably in the Assemblies of the 1970s and 1980s and on Belfast City Council. A vehement opponent of Sinn Fein, he nevertheless took part in a delegation of councillors which travelled south to meet their Dublin counterparts in 1993, when he was Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast. Mr Millar is survived by his wife Isa (Elisa), daughters Marie and Debbie, and son Frank, the London Editor of The Irish Times.
