Seven of the 13 Independent TDs have backed the Kildare North byelection campaign of Leixlip-based Independent councillor Catherine Murphy.
The TDs praised Ms Murphy's community work, and called on voters to display their dissatisfaction with the Government by supporting her campaign.
They included Dublin Central TD Tony Gregory, who said he had "every confidence" that voters would recognise Ms Murphy's independence and work record.
A former member of Labour, Democratic Left and the Workers' Party, Ms Murphy is considered to be among the favourites to take the seat vacated by Charlie McCreevy.
She is campaigning for community services, better schools, affordable childcare and public transport, and for the removal of tolls from the West-Link bridge.
At a press conference with the Independent TDs in Dublin, Ms Murphy said the Government had failed to build communities in Kildare North in spite of the growth in housing there. The Government "missed the point" when it spoke of economic growth without reference to the values in society and community services.
"This byelection is about how we can deliberately and selflessly build living, successful towns and villages, and how we can forge vibrant, healthy communities on the strength of our economic success."
She said she would have no obligation to toe the line of any party if elected. Her only obligation would be to her constituents.
Dublin North Central TD Finian McGrath said Ms Murphy was steeped in community politics, and could be "trusted" on campaigning for better services for people with disabilities.
Mayo TD Dr Jerry Cowley said Ms Murphy carried high the "Independent flag", and said there was major disillusionment with the established parties.
The other Independents who spoke for Ms Murphy were Paudge Connolly (Cavan-Monaghan), Marian Harkin (Sligo-Leitrim), James Breen (Clare) and Seamus Healy (Tipperary South).
