India today successfully test fired its nuclear-capable Prithvi missile as part of a regular series of trials of domestically designed and produced weapons, the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) reported.

The Prithvi, capable of carrying a one-tonne warhead, was fired at India's missile testing ground in the state of Orissa, on the east coast. It was the 23rd test of a Prithvi, IANS said.

India usually notifies neighbouring Pakistan, which also tests its own missiles, before such trials, but IANS did not say if New Delhi had done so this time.

After almost going to war over Kashmir less than two years ago, the nuclear rivals are steadily rebuilding relations and have agreed to meet in February to discuss solutions for a range of disputes, including Kashmir.
