Both houses of Indian parliament adjourned minutes after they met today, a day after five attackers stormed the building and killed seven people before being gunned down.

Lawmakers in the upper and lower houses observed silence as a mark of respect for the seven dead, mostly security guards at the stately complex, before the presiding officers adjourned the house until Tuesday. They gave no reason.

In the lower house, speaker Ganti Balayogi read a resolution on behalf of members of the chamber. "This is not an attack just on parliament but on the very freedom of this country. And this reinforces our determination to fight the evil of terrorism . . . at all costs," Mr Balayogi said.

Security forces have yet to identify the attackers, but a senior Indian minister said earlier the police had some clues.
