Jakarta - Indonesia yesterday formally closed a key corruption investigation involving the former President Suharto, prompting outraged students to march on parliament and senior politicians to condemn the decision.

The office of the attorney-general issued a letter formally ending the inquiry into charities linked to Mr Suharto. A spokesman stressed that the letter closed only the charities inquiry but other lines of inquiry were still being pursued.

The year-long investigation has been at the centre of public criticism of President B.J. Habibie, Mr Suharto's successor.
