Major industrial closures since 1990 have included:
1997: Asahi, Killala, Co Mayo. Japanese-owned synthetic fibres company due to close by Christmas with loss of 350 jobs.
November 1996: Semperit tyre plant, Ballyfermot, Dublin. 650 jobs lost when German parent company closed Irish operation.
October 1996: Packard Electric, Tallaght, Dublin. 800 jobs lost as part of General Motors worldwide rationalisation.
October 1995: Irish Press Newspapers, Dublin. 600 jobs lost when company was liquidated with debts of £19 million. Publication had ceased in May.
February 1993: Digital, Galway. 780 jobs lost when the computer company closed the plant's manufacturing section.
August 1990: Gateaux in Finglas, Dublin, after an 11-week strike. 240 permanent and 300 temporary jobs lost.
