Injured Gerrard to miss Boavista clash

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has been ruled out of their Champions League game away to Boavista tomorrow.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has been ruled out of their Champions League game away to Boavista tomorrow.

Gerrard suffered a hamstring strain, was substituted at halftime in Liverpool's 4-1 win over Leicester City last Saturday and has yet to recover.

Assistant manager Phil Thompson said: "He had a spasm in his leg on Saturday. Basically, it comes from a knock he received in Kiev last week and he felt it tighten as the game wore on at Leicester.

"He thought he could have carried on in the second half but we made the decision to take him off and now we are looking for him to be back on Saturday".

Gerrard, whose short career has been dogged by injuries, should be available to face Charlton Athletic in the Premier League this weekend.

"It's possible he could have gone to Portugal but with his history it is not worth risking so he will stay behind," Thompson said.

However, Michael Owen, Stephane Henchoz and Igor Biscan are all included in Liverpool's squad and Germany international Dietmar Hamann is expected to replace Gerrard in the side.
