The Irish Nurses' Organisation has called for an investigation into conditions at James Connolly Memorial Hospital, following a protest by patients last Friday.

Patients within the coronary unit at the hospital refused to take breakfast as part of the protest, which followed an incident last Thursday evening in which water and electricity supplies to the unit were cut for a time.

It later emerged that the disruption was caused by construction work being undertaken at the hospital.

It has also been revealed that a shortage of funds meant that a plan to move patients to move patients from the existing hospital to newly refurbished accommodation had not gone ahead on schedule.

The Northern Area Health Authority have now confirmed that they intend to move all 40 patients at the unit to the new hospital building, adjacent to it, this Saturday.

The Northern Area Health Board said in a statement tonight it was transferring the patients to the Coronary Care and Cardiac Unit in the new hospital building on Saturday.

"The hospital appreciates that inconvenience was caused to patients", the NAHB said in a statement tonight. It said senior management met with them last Friday morning to discuss the work being carried out to restore the water supply, which eventually returned at 10.00 a.m.

It also said discussions will take place tomorrow between hospital management and members of the Irish Nurses Organisation over concerns raised by the INO about the transfer of the Unit to the new hospital building. Training in the use of new cardiac technology commenced today and will also take place tomorrow and Friday.
