A 16-year-old Dublin youth was recorded driving at 100 m.p.h. by a Garda checkpoint minutes before he was involved in a fatal road traffic accident, Dublin City Coroner's court has been told. Mr Kenneth Lumsden, of Swan's Nest Avenue, Kilbarrack, was two days short of his 17th birthday when he was involved in the single vehicle accident at Raheny Road on November 24th last. He died the following day at Beaumont Hospital.
A taxi driver, Mr Glen Higgins, said a car overtook him at high speed on the Raheny Road and as the driver tried to get back to his correct side he seemed to lose control of the car and hit a railing.
Gardai Shane Flynn and Garda Greg Mekatarian of Howth Garda station said they were operating a speed check about a mile from the scene of the accident and clocked the car at 100 m.p.h. They denied a suggestion from the victim's mother that her son was being chased.
